13 Motoring Laws You May Have Broken Without Knowing It

The Highway Code is full of tasty bits of motoring law trivia. However, it’s amazing how after we pass our driving test some of us seem to throw the Highway Code away and never pay heed to it again.

So just as a small reminder for some of you, and may be a bit of fun, here are 13 motoring laws you may have broken without even knowing it.

  1. You can stop on a road with a single yellow line to collect or drop people off however, you are not allowed to get out of your car yourself.
  2. As well as causing you some driving issues, it is illegal not to have your lights turned on during times of low visibility issues.
  3. Should you be travelling with an animal in the car and you break down on the motorway, you must leave the animal in the car.
  4. During cold snaps and snowy conditions you must always clear the whole of your windscreen before setting off.
  5. As with the above, you may also find yourself being fined if you do not clear the snow off the roof of your car before your journey.
  6. Unless it is actually foggy it is illegal to be using either your front or rear fog lights.
  7. Be warned!!! You are not allowed to use your horn is your car is stationary.
  8. And you definitely can’t use it in a built-up area between the hours of 11:30pm and 07:00am.
  9. You can’t turn your engine on and then leave your car unattended on the highway, even if you are defrosting your car.
  10. You are not allowed to drive with your hazard lights on.
  11. It is illegal for you to throw anything out of your car window including chewing gum, cigarette ends, etc.
  12. You are not allowed to drive in the fast lane if you are towing a trailer.
  13. Excessively dark tinted windows are illegal for driving.
